Judge Dredd: Mega Heroes- Merch Review
In
1995 Mattel partnered with 2001 AD on a line of 16 action figurines based
on the Dredd Franchise. It was tied in partially with the Judge Dredd film but
fortunately there designs more closely relate to the comic counterparts. They
came in 6 packages which have 2-3 figures each, all of which are about 2-3
inches tall. Mattel deliberately puts at least one character that a kid
or collector would want in each package which makes each pack worth the
purchase.
The packs are as follows
Mega Heroes #1
First box of course has Dredd, then they throw in Fergie and mega city perp, couple of throwaway toys to include |
Mega Heroes #2
Mega Heroes 2 is picked out for the movie fans with Fargo, Mean Machine, and the Judge Hunters. Mean machine is a highlight |
Mega Heroes #3
Pack 03 has dredd again this time with fink angel and an ugly pugly. its really similar to pack 01, Dredd+minor character+generic villain |
Mega Heroes #4
Mega Heroes #5
Mega Heroes #6
This pack it the final and my personal favorite in the line. The ABC robot is epicly sized being much taller then the other figure, it also comes with another Dredd figure this time in lime green! |
All the figures are very
well painted for figures of their size with lots of little detail. I have heard
stories that the line was originally intended to be full size 6-8-inch action figures,
but that line was scrapped with the movies and the figures were adapted to a
smaller, cheaper, less risky toy line. The result is some big detail in little
packages. Unfortunately, most have little or no articulation the most you can
get with this line is just waist swivel and an arm swivel as well. A few highlights
are the mean machine angel and the Dredd figure, both top notch. The more
boring figures are based on the Dredd Film from the 90s with Fergie, Judge
hunters, Fargo, and of course it features a massive ABC Robot. Most the named
characters had an appearance in the movie, the primary exception is of course
Judge Death, who fortunately was awesome enough to make the cut besides his
absence from the movie. My biggest gripe though isn't what the line did, it’s
what it didn't do. Any toy line is going to have some evil henchmen in it, but
we get a full 4 Dredd figures in 6 packs but I would have loved if we got the
other 3 dark Judges in the line instead and Judge Anderson would have been nice. If you can find these Dredd figures for a good price, and enjoy collecting this kind of thing I truly believe they are worth snagging. Sometimes they appear on ebay auctions for cheap which is how I got mine and I do not regret it. They may not be as flashy as some large collectibles but not everyone has the space for large collectibles.

Now the real question becomes where to properly display figures this size?
Well with figures this size I knew just where they'd fit perfectly.
Slowly this machine is becoming a shrine/display to Dredd Merch |
Turns out they fit perfectly under pinball machine glass! |
Ramps just got even cooler, I glued magnets tot he bottom of the figures and then attached them to the areas of the play-field that the ball can't get to anyway |
Judge Fargo watching over the hall of justice. |
Sorry Fugly Ugly/Cursed Earth Mutant, I couldn't find room in the pinball machine for you. If anybody is interest in this line of toys you can find the on ebay below!
