Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 07
2000 AD Progs 322-375
Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files
07 carries the legacy that 06 started, no epic arcs are to be found in these
pages, unlike volume 06 though where the majority of the progs were dealing
with the apocalypse war aftermath this volume begins to return to the original
format with less connected progs the average story here being about 4 in length.
For me the standout progs were “Cry
of the Werewolf” It has great art and watching the Judges fight the classic
movie monsters is good fun. I also loved the graveyard shift. At seven
parts it really is just like a bunch of individual four-page progs which Ron
Smith decided to tie into one interconnected block. I Do love this format when
it is implemented, similar to the mega-rackets found in the complete case files
05. It makes what would be throwaway progs that would be drowned out a little
more memorable, a little more special and a little harder to forget about. They
cover a wide range of topics from Dredd’s loathing of paperwork to leapers. To
stay on any topic would be to say to much but they are fun.
Not the deepest of progs but that doesn't make it less awesome. |
Requiem for a Heavyweight is a good 4 prog arc
which I felt could’ve been done in 3. The fatties I feel are slightly overused
at this point, Many people love the fatty arcs, but I prefer my Dredd stories
to focus on, well, Dredd. Not a group of fatties.
This volume, mostly consisting of
very short stories truly has a little bit of everything, from dinosaurs, to
fatties, to cadet evaluation. We are introduced to Cadet Dekker as we get a
character which looked to be ready to replace the much-missed Judge Giant but must
have been not popular enough because she rarely reoccurs throughout the series.
Still any cadet stories are among my favorite reoccurring themes.
The opposite of rocky in every way except the amount of heart. |
The seventh case files is pretty good filler volume, it
doesn't shake up the status quo and to be completely honest could be
skipped without any confusion in the overall story-arc but if you
did skip it though you'd miss out on many great progs, both the ones I
mentioned here and the ones I chose to admit because often times progs are so
short to describe them would be far too much of a spoiler. Check out 07 if
you're reading through the entirety of Dredd but it is
non-essential.
