Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 06
2000 AD Progs 271-321
As if the apocalypse war in itself wasn’t epic enough the complete
case files 06 doubles down on the concept as John Wagner, Alan Grant, and the
guest writers/artists spend almost the entire volume (about a year when it was
originally published) dealing with the aftermath of the war itself. This is a
good thing because when half the city is destroyed it needs to mean something,
otherwise stories would be meaningless.
There is a lot of great progs in this volume, which makes it
a great read but tough to write without spoiling them, a normal comic issue has a much longer page count than an individual prog which sometimes are a complete story unto themselves. The
fatties make a few returns in there best appearances yet)and arguably ever) as
their entire way of life is put at risk with the food shortages. I also
particularly love blobs, it is the kind of weird fashion which I would expect
from mega-city one, I actually wish that blobs were more re-occurring waldo of
the mega-city but alas they leave the comic as quickly as they began. The last invader, all about a Sov-Judge who
doesn’t realize the war is over is another great prog to be found in these pages.
The stand out story for me is Destiny’s angel running from
prog 281 to 288. It brings back mean machine and writes the wrongs of the Judge
Child arc for me. To quote Wagner on the return of mean machine “he was just
too good a character to throw away, and somehow he suited miracle rebirth” I am
not a fan of miracle rebirths myself but as an American comic fan my senses
have become dulled and I am so used to this offense that I just roll with it
now.
The Complete Case Files 06 is a great volume if you have read
05, if not then go buy 05 because this is not a standalone volume at all. It really
helps the credibility of the writers that the commit to the new setting of post
apocalypse war Dredd and explores realistic problems in the unique manner that
only Dredd could do.
